There’s no doubt that leg locks are one of the hottest trends in BJJ right now, and people are seeing more success at the elite levels than ever before as leg lock artists. The big problem? Most of those leg lock techniques and strategies are illegal in the gi! The IBJJF and most other major Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu leagues are more restrictive with what they allow below the waist, so a lot of people just abandon the leg locks altogether.
That is why, when someone comes along at the highest levels and they are using the leg lock to get the submission, it’s something special! Mikey gets to the ankle and gets the tap as well as anyone in the sport today and it is thanks to his bulletproof progression series. Once he sees his opening, Mikey knows how to attack and attack, always moving forward in his series until he is able to get even the most stubborn grapplers to submit.
In the traditional gi, your options for the leg lock become a lot more limited than under no-gi rulesets like ADCC-rules or EBI-rules. You can’t reap to close a wedge around the leg, you can’t roll to the heel hook, and up until brown belt you really only get the straight ankle lock to play with. Still, if you know how to really isolate and lock down the leg, it can become a game changer.
Mikey has found the solution to some of the most common positions he sees, including the dreaded double guard pull! Instead of letting this be a position where he has to stall out and look to be stood-up, or pop up and play the top position, he has another answer: find the leg and start working for control!
Mikey Musumeci is already, at a young age, one of the most accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes of all time. He’s a two-time IBJJF World Champion, Pan American Champion, and a UAEJJF Champion, with a resume that reads like a lower-weight who’s who.
