In this lecture, Martin Schwarze, DO FACC FACOI and Bryan Trimmer, DO FACOI FACC will differentiate chest pain as cardiac or non-cardiac.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate chest pain as cardiac or non-cardiac and identify the usefulness and validity of Troponin.
- Describe the workup/differential of chest pain.
- Identify what causes contribute to hospital readmission rates.
- Create a strategy and plan for decreasing the hospital readmission rates for Heart Failure Patients.
Dr. Martin Schwarze is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology of St. Louis University Hospitals and the past Chief of Cardiology at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. He is currently a physician with the Barnes-Jewish Christian Medical Group.
Dr. Schwarze graduated from the AT Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1973. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Ā He then attended the fellowship program in Cardiology at St. Louis University Hospital, where he continued to teach echocardiology part-time for 15 years. Upon completing his fellowship, Dr.Schwarze established a private practice, which existed for 32 years. Ā His group is now part of the BJC Medical Group in the Metropolitan St. Louis area. Dr. Schwarze is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Schwarze has researched echocardiology, congestive heart failure, and lipid therapy, which has resulted in several publications in these areas. He has spoken at numerous national programs and has been the program chairman of many educational symposia in cardiology. Dr. Schwarze has received four “Educator of the Year” awards and is a Master Fellow in the American College of Osteopathic Internists and a Fellow in the American College of Cardiology. He is also the past President of the St. Louis Chapter of the American Heart Association. He has received the Hugh McCollough Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the St. Louis Chapter of the AHA and a lifetime teaching award from Des Peres Hospital.

Bryan Trimmer, DO, FACOI, FACC, FASCAI is an interventional cardiologist, who is certified by the ACOI, ACC and HRS, Heart Rhythm Society. Dr. Trimmer earned his doctor of osteopathy degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center and completed residencies at the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital in Michigan in Internal Medicine and in Cardiology. Ā He completed a cardiology fellowship at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. Ā Dr. Trimmer is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. Ā His practice includes diagnostic and interventional, cardiac, peripheral vascular, TAVR and pacing procedures. He currently practices at Missouri Baptist Hospital, in St. Louis, Missouri with Dr. Martin Schwarze, who he has been associated with for 35 years.
