Terada Kiyuki, Saikoshihan (Chief Shihan), was born on March 20, 1922 in Nagasaki, Kyushu, Japan. The following is a brief chronology of various significant events in his life. Let’s start in April 1934, when he graduated from Minami Kushiyama High School and entered Kaisei Junior High School, where he took the first steps to study the art of Kendo.
June 1937. Terada Kiyuki, at the age of 15, wins the judo championship and receives the award as the best judoka of the year. At that time he was studying at the Judo Shihan and became an uchi-deshi (inner pupil) of the dojo, and in July 1937, as a student at the High School of the Nagasaki Prefecture, he took part in a school judo competition.
April 1940. At the age of 18, Terada Kiyuki entered the university in Takusoku, where he joined the student karate club. In 1941 he entered Shiodzuki University, where he met Shioda Gozo. From 1940 to 1943 Terada Kiyuki studied Sumo with Akutsugawa Sensei, Judo with Sone Sensei and Kasima-ryu jujutsu with Osugi Sensei.
December 1943. Terada Kiyuki, at the age of 21, enlists in the army due to the ongoing war, and in March 1944 is ordered to join the Air Force Academy, where he worked until August 1945, when he heard the official announcement (in Kumamoto) of the end of the war. … Two days later, on August 17, he returned home to Nagasaki.
The year is 1948. Terada Kiyuki, 26, comes to Tokyo to work for Miyakoshi. 2 years later, in 1950, he joined the military police in Yokogama. In the same year, Terada Kiyuki began training in Aikikai at the Honbu Dojo and was taught by Ueshiba Morihei O’sensei and Ueshiba Kissomaru Dosu.
1952 year. Terada Shihan at the age of 29 teaches an aikido workshop for NKK and 85 Tokyo police stations with Shiodo Gozo. Then in 1955 he led aikido training for the Police Department in Yokohama and at the Drake Summer Camp in Saitama.
July 1955. Terada Shihan at the age of 33 together with Shiodo Gozo found the Yoshinkan style. 1957 year. Terada Shihan, 35, meets with US Senator Robert Kenedy and Prime Minister Nakasone at the Honbu Yoshinkan Dojo.
1961 year. Terada Shihan leaves Tokyo at the age of 39 and begins teaching aikido at a military base in Yokosko.
1967 year. Terada Shihan, 45, is taking one of several trips overseas in Japan to teach an aikido workshop in Honolulu, Hawaii.
1990 year. Terada Shihan, at the age of 68, received 9 dan (kyu dan) from Shiodo Gozo. He also receives the title of Saikoshihan Yoshinkan Aikido. He is now the President of Aikido Yoshinkan Seiseikai and also the only saikoshihan in Yoshinkan Aikido.
Every year on the third weekend of May in Kamakura (Japan), under the leadership of Terada Shihan, seminars for instructors are held, where masters from all over Japan come together, as well as masters from other countries.
