Course Description

The activity will address osteopathic clinicians’, as well as other practicing clinicians’, needs to improve knowledge, competence and/or performance for the treatment of Systemic Disorders and Physiological Functions by leveraging the principles of osteopathic medicine.

Many infants have difficulty with sucking and swallowing, causing issues in effectively breastfeeding, feeding, swallowing, and speech. Tongue and lip ties can affect feeding as well as oromotor development and speech. Effective treatment varies for infants and children. This on-demand webcast will offer participants the opportunity to learn the neuroanatomic basis for how OMT affects physiologic functions, and meets of needs of interested physicians who want to increase their knowledge in this area of medical practice, including assessment of existing and emerging therapies, as they develop customized treatment plans via interactive case scenarios.

• By the completion of the course, the participant will be able to describe the research substantiating the application of evidence-based OMT for:

Evaluating and treating infants with breastfeeding/feeding problems

Effective evaluation of infants for lip, tongue and buccal cheek ties

Understanding the anatomy related to the feeding, frenulums, facial and oromotor development

Understanding the relationship between torticollis, plagiocephaly and tongue ties

Communicating your osteopathic findings and treatment plan to parents

• By completion of the course, the participant will be able assess the applicability of OMT procedures in these areas for their particular practice and integrate them in the care of their patients.
• By the completion of the course, the participant will have the opportunity to view live demonstration of the relevant OMT procedures and ask questions about them.

Target Audience

This activity is open for all osteopathic and medical physicians (DO/MD), Dentist (DDS/DMD), Medical Student (DO/MD), and International Osteopaths.

Prerequisites

Approved (OPC/OCA/SCTF) 40-hour Introduction to Osteopathy in the Cranial Field course. Please email proof of completion of an approved course from OPC, OCA or SCTF to [email protected].

After graduating from College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific of Western University in 1988, Dr. Mary Anne completed a year of training in general medicine and then three years of pediatric residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center. She is also board certified in integrative medicine, holds a Certificate of Proficiency from and is recognized as a Fellow in the Osteopathic Cranial Academy. An avid student and teacher, she recently contributed a chapter to Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy on nutrition for neurodevelopmental issues in children.

Enthusiastic about the contribution that osteopathy’s holistic approach makes to children’s health and development, Dr. Mary Anne is a sought after teacher and lecturer in the United States and abroad. She enjoys sharing her knowledge at community events.

In practice for over 28 years Dr. Mary Anne has extensive experience supporting parents in keeping their children healthy and reaching their optimal potential as well as treating common pediatric issues such as allergies, ADHD, asthma, autism, ear infections and developmental issues including a wide variety of neurologic and genetic issues. Newborns love osteopathic manipulative medicine which can help relieve the stress of birth as well as help with feeding issues, reflux, torticollis, misshapen head (plagiocephaly) and colic.

Kathryn Gill, M.D. has practiced Traditional Osteopathic Medicine and Family Medicine in Santa Monica, CA since 1992. Dr. Gill attended Dartmouth Medical School in New Hampshire for her pre-clinical medical education and graduated from Brown University Program in Medicine in Rhode Island. She completed her Postgraduate Medical Training at U.C.L.A. Santa Monica Family Medicine Residency. Throughout her medical education, Dr. Gill did post-graduate courses in Traditional Osteopathic Medicine and numerous long-term, individual clinical Osteopathic rotations with some of the top Osteopathic Physicians in the United States. Although her unique educational background allows Dr. Gill to bridge the worlds of Allopathic and Osteopathic Medicine to care for patients of all ages, she is passionate about working with newborns and children with special needs.Dr. Gill is internationally recognized in Biodynamic Pediatric Osteopathy. She is one of a core faculty, selected by James Jealous, D.O., the inventor of Biodynamic Osteopathy, to teach the Osteopathic Biodynamic Phase Courses, and Biodynamic Pediatric courses throughout the United States and Europe. Her work in Biodynamics has led to a fascination with human embryologic development, which she utilizes both in her teaching and in treatment of patients. She also works closely with Functional Dentists and Oral Myologists interested in physiologic methods to develop the face and repair structural abnormalities and swallowing dysfunction.

An assistant Clinical Professor for Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Gill also holds a Proficiency Certification from the Osteopathic Cranial Academy. She has lectured for the Academy, the International Society of Myofunctional Therapists, numerous Dental Conferences, the International Kongress of Osteopaths in Germany, the Osteopathic Center for Children in San Diego, The Center for Advanced Medical Education, The Foundation for Osteopathic Research and Teaching (F.O.R.T.), the Massachusetts Osteopathic Medical Society, the Berkshire Osteopathic Study Group for physicians, U.C. San Diego, U.C.L.A. and more. She has acted as President for the West Coast Osteopathic Study Group, Treasurer for the Still-Sutherland Osteopathic Study Group, and has written articles for a number of publications. Dr. Gill has also participated in educational films explaining the benefits of Osteopathic Medical care.
