Course Description

The activity will address osteopathic clinicians’, as well as other practicing clinicians’, needs to improve knowledge, competence and/or performance for the treatment of pediatric patients by leveraging the principles of osteopathic medicine.

OMT is often underutilized for pediatric patients and many primary care practitioners struggle to integrate OMT into their busy practices.   This on-demand webcast will offer participants the opportunity to review several techniques that can be quickly and efficiently incorporated into busy clinics.   Drs. Tobey and Wolf will also share their tips for how they incorporated OMT into their general practices, including a review of appropriate documentation, coding, and billing.   The course will cover several common pediatric complaints, including otitis media, sinusitis, constipation, pneumonia, and asthma, and how to incorporate OMT with each of these concerns.

Learning Objectives

1. Discuss practical integration of OMT into general pediatrics’ practice, including reimbursement and timing of visits.
2. Demonstrate osteopathic techniques that can be used to adjunctively manage AOM/sinusitis, a variety of respiratory complaints, and constipation.
3. Review pertinent anatomy and physiology that influence osteopathic treatments in the pediatric population.
4. Discuss modifications of osteopathic exam and OMT for a variety of different ages and developmental stages.

No prerequisites required for DOs.

Dr. Wolf earned her D.O. degree from Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific.   She then completed her residency in pediatrics at the dually-accredited program at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/Doctors Hospital in Columbus, OH.   After completing her training, Dr. Wolf was hired by Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a general pediatrician and also ran a pediatric OMT clinic.   Dr. Wolf was hired as the Co-Program Director of the Nationwide Children’s Pediatric Residency Osteopathic Track in 2016.   This program was the first pediatric program in the country to receive this designation under the new ACGME Single Accreditation.

In 2017, Dr. Wolf started at Touro as the Director of Pediatric OMM.   She is working to increase the osteopathic pediatric curriculum for students at Touro and beyond.   She sees pediatric OMT patients at the Fairfield Solano County Clinic.   She also supervises the pediatric OMT Lab in H89 on campus.   Dr. Wolf is also the OMM Fellowship Director at Touro.

Dr. Wolf is a national speaker on pediatric osteopathy and osteopathic scholarly activity.   She serves on the Executive Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on Osteopathic Pediatricians.   She is also committed to continued osteopathic research, especially in the field of pediatrics.   Research interests include the use of OMT to treat concussions, breastfeeding problems, autism spectrum disorder, plagiocephaly, and torticollis.   She also serves as the Chair of the Poster Presentation Subcommittee for the Louisa Burns Osteopathic Research Committee of the American Academy of Osteopathy.

Dr Tobey graduated from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005, completed a traditional osteopathic internship at Heart Of Lancaster in Litiz PA in 2006, followed by her Pediatric Residency at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital in 2009. She practiced General Pediatrics including OMT for seven years before returning to complete a plus one residency in Osteopathic Manual Medicine with VCOM Virginia in 2017. She is a board certified in pediatrics and board certified in Osteopathic Manual Medicine and now focus her clinical practice on pediatric OMT. She is the current president of the American Academy of Pediatric Osteopathy and an associate professor of clinical pediatrics and Osteopathic Manual Medicine at the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
