New guidelines for osteopathic physicians & surgeons were enacted by the Washington State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, Nov 1, 2018. In lieu of a proposal to place prior authorization on all acute opioid prescriptions, the WSMA and WSHA worked with HCA to jointly-endorse a physician and patient centric program turning on a jointly endorsed acute prescribing policy, a clinical exemption for when the policy is not appropriate, and creation of the Better Prescribing Better Treatment Program, which leverages data with participating systems to significantly improve prescribing.
