This lecture is an overview of the proposed mechanisms for childhood obesity, how to mitigate and assess.
Learning Objectives:
- Discuss the overall management goals of treating obesity in pediatric patients.
- Exam epigenetic implications as causation for, and prevention of, pediatric obesity
- Examine the association of antibiotics and childhood obesity.
- Understand how childhood obesity is defined and clinically classified.
- Deepen an understanding of appropriate components of a history and physical exam.
Dr. Justin Puckett is dual board-certified in Osteopathic Family Medicine/OMT and Obesity Medicine. He is a graduate of AT Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Obesity Medicine Association. Dr. Puckett is the Chief Medical Officer of Complete Family Medicine, a practice he founded and grew to over 20 providers serving seven communities in Northeast Missouri, which is now a part of Hannibal Regional Healthcare System.
Dr. Puckett enjoys practicing full-spectrum Family Medicine and providing Obesity Medicine Consults. He is active in the community serving on a variety of boards and advisory committees. He is an avid teacher, nearly always having a healthcare student work alongside him.
Dr. Puckett is married to Kylene and has four children, ages 9-14. Together they are active in their faith community and enjoy traveling and exploring new places. He especially enjoys SCUBA diving with his two oldest sons and wife.
Dr. Puckett is also a weight loss patient himself, having lost 180 pounds in 2011. While the journey continues, he works hard to share his story and to encourage others, both providers and patients. He has worked at a national level to advocate against weight bias and received the prestigious Bias Buster Award from the Obesity Action Coalition for his effective advocacy.
