Learning Objectives:
- Review the history of medical record documentation.
- Review MACRA, MIPS, APM.
- Define and apply strategies that can help reduce frustration, improve productivity, and reduce work after the clinic.
- Understand the recent changes to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) policies on ancillary staff and medical student documentation of components of E/M services in the medical record.
- Decide, develop, and advocate for positive EHR systematic changes for patients and providers.

Dr. Paulson is a graduate of Oklahoma State University (OSU) where he obtained an undergraduate degree in physiology and master’s in zoology. Ā Later he completed a PhD in biomedical science with emphasis in pharmacology and physiology and a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at OSU Center for Health Sciences. Ā He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and currently participating in the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine’s Osteopathic Health Policy Fellowship. After nearly a decade as a forensic scientist working for the FBI, New Mexico State Police and Tulsa Police Department, he transitioned from forensic scientist to family medicine physician. Ā One of his cases was even featured on A&E’s Cold Case Files television program airing in 2005. Ā He has practiced as a rural family medicine physician in Missouri, Chief Medical Informatics Officer, and presently is serving as the Chair of Primary Care on the Joplin campus of KCU. Dr Paulson is currently the President of the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians, and Vice President of the Community Clinic Board of Directors in Joplin, MO.
