This series, Way of the Warrior, with a total of 8 episodes aired in 1983, was produced by the BBC, and has become a classic in the martial arts world.
Commented by John Waterman, the series of documentaries is of a high quality, in the spirit of BBC.
Fortunately, there are some budo entusiasts out there who taped the series.
And now, one of them has transferred the whole series to DVD.
I must say he’s done a remarkable job.
The original recording was done on Betamax tapes, which at the time provided the best quality home video recording.
The tapes were played back on a high quality Betamax player, and the composite output was fed into a professional digital enhancer/decoder, allowing adjustments to the color balance, color shift and time base correction.
He claims that the transfers actually look better than the original recordings.
I have no way of knowing if that’s true, but the result is clearly as good as you get it when you consider the original media.
The episodes are:1 – Shorinji Kempo – “The New Way”2 – Kalari – “The Indian Way”3 – Aikido and Kendo – “The Sporting Way”4 – T’ai Chi – “The Soft Way” (Also included, Hsing Yi and Ba Gua)5 – Escrima – “The Fillipino Way”6 – Karate – “The Way of the Empty Hand” 7 – Kung Fu – “The Hard Way” (Includes ultra rare Dan Inosanto instruction!!)8 – The Samurai Way (Katori Shino Ryu with Otake sensei)Episode 8 is a 60-minute show about Ritsuke Otake sensei and Katori Shinto Ryu.
The program shows lots of kata and scenes from Otakes classes.
I found the program very interesting.
I’ve seen quite a lot of Otake sensei performing kata, but I enjoyed watching the other parts of the show as well.
It gives you another insight into his approach to the school.
While searching for ways of getting this DVD, I found a page with information about the program on bbc.co.uk.
It said something about the contents of the program.
And in the end, I found an interesting note: “Not to be re-aired without the written permission of Otake sensei”.
I don’t know for sure why, but I’ve heard that Otake sensei has become more careful about who and where he shows techniques and shares information about the school.
This might have to do with people abusing his trust in the past.
